The American Legion Auxiliary stands as a shining example of selfless service. With nearly a million members from every background, the Auxiliary runs hundreds of volunteer programs, contributes tens of thousands of hours to our communities and veterans, and raises millions of dollars for its own programs — all through the work of volunteers. The Auxiliary is far more than its name suggests: we have built our own distinct identity while serving side-by-side with the veterans of the American Legion. Like the Legion, our interests have grown to embrace the entire community.
Through more than 8,000 units in every state and in some foreign countries, the Auxiliary carries the spirit of America that has endured through war and peace. We stand behind America as firmly today as we did when the Auxiliary was founded in 1920. In 1919, at the first National Convention of The American Legion, it was agreed that the organization's mission could not be fully served without the support and dedication of each member's family. Auxiliary membership is open to Legionnaires' grandmothers, mothers, sisters, spouses, and direct and adopted female descendants. Today we are recognized as the most influential patriotic women's organization in the world, yet our success has not changed our purpose. We join hands with The American Legion to serve God and Country as a family, and that bond will never be broken.
